WapuuBha asking ‘Kem Chho?’ from WordCamp Ahmedabad

We are very much excited to present the official Wapuu for the WordCamp Ahmedabad 2017. WapuuBha from the #WCAhmedabad is asking ‘Kem Chho WordPress Community?’

It’s been wonderful journey designing the official mascot for the WordCamp Ahmedabad. Let me take you a few weeks back when we have started searching for the Wapuu Character and how we created it.

The Idea for the WapuuBha …

We started searching for the inspiration around the city. We have been observing what people talk most about the city. We also interacted with many people and asked them what makes Ahmdavadis different from the others? There were many answers but one common answer was the celebration of Navratri.

So, we decided to create the character that represents the traditional Navratri festival celebration of Ahmedabad. Navratri is one of the most famous and widely celebrated nine-night dancing festival in all part of India and especially in Gujarat. Each night, all over the state, villages and in cities like Ahmedabad, people gather in open space to celebrate feminine divinity, referred to as Maa Shakti. People worship Maa Shakti and enjoy the traditional dance form called Garba. Amadavadis are well known as celebration freaks and Garba crazy people. You will not find any celebration completed without Garba beats if you are in Ahmedabad. No matters it is wedding ceremony or a birthday party, Garba will be always there in Amdavadi celebration.

And started working on designing the sketches for the same. Creative people from our team came up with many ideas to represent Garba with Wapuu. We have selected some of the best that we like the most.

Then, we converted those sketches into the initial vector version by filling the colors to the sketches. All those versions were looking attractive and cute.

We discussed a lot about the which version to select. And finally, after hours of discussions, we decided to go with the Wapuu holding the Dandiya, as it resembles the traditional dress of Navratri. Then, we have designed few more version of Wapuu with different color options.

And, here is the official Wapuu Character for the WordCamp Ahmedabad 2017.

The next important thing was to name the character. There were lots of suggestions from the community. Some of the names that pop up in our mind were ‘Mota Bhai (Big Brother)’ ‘WapuuBhai’, ‘WapuuBha’, ‘Wapuuji’, ‘GujjuBhai’ etc. And, we decided to name the character ‘WapuuBha’. The name represents the dignity of the royal heritage of the city. We have created the different font variations in both local Gujarati and English language.

We are very much excited today to introduce you with the WapuuBha of WordCamp Ahmedabad.

WapuuBha is waiting to welcome you at #WCAhmedabd. Get yourself ready to have fun with the WapuuBha.
